Interim Target for Emissions Reductions by 2030
Feedback updated 3 Mar 2022
We asked
A requirement of the Climate Change Act 2021, this consultation sought views on the level of the Isle of Man’s interim greenhouse gas reduction by 2030, to ensure that we are on track to achieve net zero by 2050.
The consultation outlined two options, 35% and 45% emissions reduction, which focus on the high emission sectors of energy, heating, transport and land use/food production.

The consultation received 611 responses from individuals (95%) and groups/organisations (5%).
Overall, 53% of individual responses were in favour of one of the interim targets proposed in the consultation. (38%) expressed support for a ‘high ambition target – 45% by 2030’, with 15% of individual responses favouring a ‘medium ambition target - 35% by 2030’.
In comparison, 21% of individuals favoured ‘no target at all’, with <1% favouring neither target (with no alternative preference given). 13% of individual responses supported a ‘target higher than 45%’ and 12% supported a target lower than 35%, with the remaining 1% showing favour for a target between 35% and 45%.
51% of individuals supported a target of 45% reduction by 2030, or higher.
In addition, 28 responses were received from groups/organisations. Of these, 17 (61%) favoured the high ambition target - 45% by 2030 and the remaining 11 groups/organisations indicated they supported neither of the high or medium targets proposed. Of these, the majority (9 groups/organisations) favoured no target at all.
We did
Climate change regulations which set an interim greenhouse gas reduction target of 45% by 2035 will go before the March sitting of Tynwald for approval.
The Climate Change Transformation Team would like to thank those who have responded to the consultation.
A detailed summary of the consultation responses developed by Eunomia Research & Consulting is provided below.
Overview
We want your thoughts - to help us set our Island’s target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, as an interim step to achieving net zero by 2050. Please help us by answering just four short consultation questions and telling us a little bit about yourself at the end of this document.
Why your views matter
We want to hear from you!
This consultation is about our interim target and whilst it gives indications as to the combination of actions needed to progress towards net zero, the actual and proposed actions and their precise timing will be determined through other detailed work streams, most critically on future energy generation and security.
What happens next
The responses will be analysed and, alongside the results of government and accompanying independent research, will play a key role in influencing the final decision of which target is chosen. The results of this consultation will be published once analysed.
The chosen target will be set by regulations which, subject to Tynwald approval, will come into effect 1 April 2022.
