20mph speed limits
Overview
The Department of Infrastructure (DOI) is seeking feedback on speed limits on residential roads in the Isle of Man. This follows a resolution from the Court of Tynwald. An initial Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) highlighting proposed changes was advertised for a period of two weeks in March 2025. This period of extended public consultation is a continuation of this TRO process.
Currently, the default speed limit for residential roads on the Isle of Man is 30mph. By changing the default speed limit to 20mph, roads that may be better suited to remain at 30mph will need to be designated as such within the TRO.
The DOI has developed a series of baseline criteria to determine which roads are best suited to either 20mph or 30mph and produced a road network map highlighting these proposals.
Why your views matter
The DOI recognises the importance of local knowledge and wishes to utilise public feedback in addition to the baseline criteria, in evaluating these proposals. The DOI would like to invite members of the public to examine the proposals and contribute their knowledge of the roads to comment on the proposed changes.
