We asked

The purpose of the consultation was to consult on proposed changes to the fees which are charged by the Isle of Man Ship Registry. The proposals in the consultation form the basis for new Merchant Shipping (Fees) Regulations 2020 which will revoke and replace the existing Merchant Shipping (Fees) Regulations 2019.

We received four responses to the consultation of which one had no objection to the proposals and one sought clarification on the definition of 'technically managed from the Island'.

One response stated that whilst the Ship Registry provided one of the best services to yachts it was becoming expensive compared to other jurisdictions and suggested the inclusion of a discount for pleasure vessels technically managed from the Island.

The final response sought clarification on the proposed fees for new build passenger ships and once that was provided the respondent had no objection to the proposals.

We did

We provided clarification on the queries raised and further considered the fees charged for services provided to yachts. The Department recognised that yacht fees may be expensive compared to some other jurisdictions however it felt that the proposed fees were appropriate for the level of service that is provided.

The Merchant Shipping (Fees) Regulations 2020 were approved by Tynwald at its March 2020 sitting.
