Overview

Cabinet Office is responsible for the designation of Conservation Areas as set out in section 18 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1999. This consultation seeks the views of residents, businesses and those with an interest in the built and historic environment on whether the area of Douglas Head has sufficient merit to be designated a “Conservation Area”. Cabinet Office has yet to decide on whether or not an ‘Order’ which is the legislation necessary to make such a designation will be pursued and what the extent of any boundary will be.

Why your views matter

Conservation Areas are those areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.   A non-commissioned Report has been put forward to Cabinet Office suggesting that Douglas Head warrants greater protection under existing legislation.  Because of the special nature of Conservation Areas, there are tighter planning controls and obligations in respect of demolition, new development, property alterations and advertisements and signs.  In general, properties within a Conservation Area are excluded from all permitted development meaning that planning approval is required in most instances.

What happens next

Responses to this consultation will aid Cabinet Office in taking forward further investigative work into the potential for a Douglas Head Conservation Area Order.
