Ministerial foreword

Having carefully considered the advice of the Recreational Fisheries Management Board regarding the increasing pressures on our native Atlantic salmon, I have taken the decision to introduce voluntary conservation measures ahead of the forthcoming season. These measures are intended to provide short‑term protection for this iconic species while the Department continues to evaluate options for potential regulations.

As a keen angler myself, I fully appreciate both the cultural importance of salmon fishing and the very real challenges facing our fish stocks. This makes it all the more important that we act responsibly and decisively. I therefore welcome the opportunity to take positive steps that support the long‑term sustainability of our salmon populations.

Your views will play a vital role in shaping the future management of this species. I encourage all stakeholders to engage constructively as we work together to safeguard the health of our rivers and the resilience of our native salmon for generations to come.

Hon Clare Barber MHK,
Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture.
